Having a dog is not any less than having another family member. Dogs need the same amount of attention, care, love and space like your very own children. Like all animals, dogs prefer to be left free over a long area of land, something that they treat as their ‘own territory’! When you have a pet, it’s practically impossible to let the dog be inside as well outside throughout the day. The dirty paw prints from the mud, or the mud from his fur can create serious cleanliness issues. Dogs tend to chew onto furniture, clothes, books, paper and practically everything they can reach!

Dog kennels are the best alternative. Dogs are essentially territorial animals and love to have their own space to simply lie around all day long. Getting an outdoor dog kennel completely fulfils this requirement of his. Not only does it give him the liberty of playing around all day in the mud, but it also gives him shelter in case he wants to take a nap and it is too sunny or cold outside.

Buying dog kennels can be an expensive affair. One of the most popular alternatives is to build it all by yourself if you have minimum experience in carpentry. If you’re considering making a kennel outdoors by yourself, make sure that it is spacious enough for your dog to stretch around comfortably; on the other hand it shouldn’t be too big also, since this reduces the heat effect.

While building a dog kennel, make a rough sketch of what you’re planning. Take approximate measurements and search for the right kind of material. It shouldn’t be very expensive and at the same time it should be of good quality and strength.

The shape and size of the kennel are also equally important factor. Imagine a poodle living in a kennel made for a Saint Bernard! Doesn’t quite fit in, does it? Keep the dogs comfort, likes and dislikes in mind while designing the kennel. If there’s a particular corner that he prefers, you can assemble his kennel there. Considering such small aspects will help your dog feel at home. So go ahead and get your dog a kennel, he’s sure to enjoy it. For all you know, he might get so possessive about it that he may not let you come close to it!
